The technology and amount of work put into the development of golf balls has been considerable, though it has not had the publicity that golf club development has. Most golfers tend to believe that advances in clubs have been considerable faster than the relatively slow progress made in golf ball design and construction.
In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. A tremendous amount of money has been spent in the design of golf balls, and choice goes much farther than just what brand you prefer. Golf Balls Come In Pieces!
Golf balls can be constructed in from one to three pieces, and the construction determines the reaction of the ball when is struck by a club. One piece balls are generally designed for beginners and driving ranges, but not predominantly for playing. It is a solid dimpled ball made from a thermoplastic resin such as Surlyn, is not expensive and does not travel far when hit.
The two piece ball goes a step further, and is the type used my most amateur golfers. They consists a hard plastic sphere with a cover designed to give more distance. It is harder than a one piece golf ball and is not so easily controllable for direction, but is the ball preferred by most everyday golfers.
Finally, three piece golf balls have an inner solid rubber or liquid core which allows more spin to be imparted on the ball. These softer balls can be controlled by better players and the construction allows a very high spin rate which is preferred by good amateur and professional players.
Don’t Forget The Four Piece!
There is actually a fourth class of golf balls: the four piece! The first layer which consists of from 300 – 500 dimples, imparts the ‘feel’ which is important to most golfers, whereas the second is designed to transfer energy from the outer layer to the inner core, which puts on spin and gives distance. The fourth layer lies just before the inner core, and is intended to give distance and more controllable spin from the irons used around the green. You can make your own mind up about the effectiveness of this! This type of ball is not yet main-stream, but is the next ‘new thing’ that the ball designers have come up with.
Test For The Best!
Golf balls can also be classified according to ‘spin’ properties and ‘feel’, but these are simply properties imparted by the various constructions, or pieces, that make up the ball.
Whatever your level of golf, you are advised to test a range of different types of golf balls before deciding which is best for you. You can do this on a practice range, though are best to make your decision on a full round where all aspects of the game are given a good test.
